DFT Meter & Paint Coating Thickness Gauge

Why do we need to measure coating thickness ?
Film thickness in coatings can have a large impact in cost and quality.Too much paint may make a layer dry while too little would not protect the object properly.Measurement of film thickness should be a routine event for all coating people. The correct gauge to use depends on the thickness range of the coat, the shape and substrate type, cost of the gauge and how critical it is to get an accurate measurement. Paint thickness measure of a vehicle is important to find out if the car has been involved in an road accident,is refurbished or had other repairs.Repaired body panels do not have the same wear rating and durability of the original factory paint work.,so using an Elco meter is an extremely valuable tool. Paint thickness measurement is an important tool for finding evidence of accidents, rust spots, and past paint repairs.A paint meter is more accurate, reliable and quantifiable than a visual inspection. missing paintwork on just a single car can cost more than the price of a meter.

Who uses DFT Meter & Paint coating thickness meters and gauges?

The main buyers of coating thickness meters and gauges are the used car managers and the buyers for stores that sell used cars.also automotive wholesalers, inspection services and insurance companies buy them.

The tools to measure coating thickness?
The tool that is available for film thickness measurement and how to use it, is useful to any coating operation. Commonly used measuring techniques include non-destructive dry film methods such as gravimetric (mass measurement). Also methods are available for powder and liquid coating to measure the film before it is cured.
Magnetic film gauges are used in measuring, non destructively, the thickness of a non magnetic coating on ferrous substrates.Almost all coatings on steel and iron can be calculated/measured this way. Magnetic gauges use one of two principles of operation, 1. Magnetic Pull Offor Magnetic 2. Electro Magnetic Induction Magnetic pull off gauges use a graduated scale, permanent magnet and a calibrated spring. The attraction between the magnet steel and magnet pulls the two together. As the coating separating both of them increases,it becomes very easy to pull the magnet away. The coating thickness is calculated by measuring the amount of pull-off force.Thickness coatings will have stronger magnetic attraction, while thicker films have comparatively less magnetic attraction. Magnetic pull of gauges are simple, rugged, inexpensive and do not require any calibration adjustment. They are a excellent low cost alternative in situations where quality standard goals require only a couple of readings during production. Magnetic and Electromagnetic Induction There are instruments which measure coating thickness by creating a magnetic field. They measure the change in magnetic flux density at the surface of a magnetic probe as it nears a steel surface. The magnitude of the flux density at the probe surface is directly proportional to the distance from the steel substrate. Thus coating thickness can be determined. Electromagnetic gauges come in many shapes and sizes.readings are shown on an (LCD)Liquid crystal display. They can have options to store measurement results. They can also perform instant analysis of output results to a printer or computer for further examination. The manufacturer's instructions must be followed for most accurate results. The standard test methods are available in ASTMD1186,7091-05,ISO-2178 and ISO2805 Eddy current-Eddy current techniques are used to measure thickness of non conductive coatings on non-ferrous metal substances. They work by creating an alternative magnetic field at the probe of the surface. They look and operate like electromagnetic gauges.Standard methods for applications and performance of this test are available in ASTMB244,ASTMD1499,D7091-05 and ISO2360. It is now common for gauges to incorporate both magnetic and eddy current principles into one unit .They measure coatings over any metals by switching automatically from one principle to the other. These combination units are now popular with painters and powder coaters.

How to use DFT Meter & Paint Coating Thickness Gauge?

Paint thickness meters are fast and easy to use.we have to find if there are differences in the thickness of paint. You should go around the car the first time and put the paint meter and gauge on each panel once. After that check the thickness of the entire vehicle. If you see the meter or guage going up and down ,you will know that work has been done on a particular panel.

Coating thickness standards and preserving equipment efficiency Coating thickness gauges are calibrated to known thickness standards. It is best to ensure that the standards are traceable to a national measurement institute like the NIST(National Institute Of Standards & Technology).A regular check against these standards verifies that the gauge is working properly. When readings do not meet the accuracy specimens of the gauge ,the gauge must be adjusted or repaired and then calibrated again. For preserving the efficiency of the device and equipment ,it is recommended that they not used.A coating thickness gauge must likewise be readjusted consistently to guarantee its efficiency as a vital tool in different industries.
