The magnitude of the flux density at the probe surface is directly proportional to the distance from the steel substrate.Thus coating thickness can be determined. Electromagnetic gauges come in many shapes and sizes.readings are shown on an (LCD)Liquid crystal display.They can have options to store measurement results.They can also perform instant analysis of output results to a printer or computer for further examination. The manufacturer's instructions must be followed for most accurate results. The standard test methods are available in ASTMD1186,7091-05,ISO-2178 and ISO2805 Eddy current-Eddy current techniques are used to measure thickness of non conductive coatings on non-ferrous metal substances.They work by creating an alternative magnetic field at the probe of the surface.They look and operate like electromagnetic gauges.Standard methods for applications and performance of this test are available in ASTMB244,ASTMD1499,D7091-05 and ISO2360. It is now common for gauges to incorporate both magnetic and eddy current principles into one unit .They measure coatings over any metals by switching automatically from one principle to the other.These combination units are now popular with painters and powder coaters.
